Mixing is both art and science. It’s the process of taking individual tracks and combining them to make a cohesive song performance.
Essentially it involves balancing the levels of the different tracks, placing them in the soundstage using panning and reverb, and applying EQ and compression to differentiate them from each other. Special effects can also be employed where desired. All with the goal of producing a cohesive balanced recording that pleases the ear and honours the song.
It can be time consuming or not depending on the complexity of the project and it’s easy to get carried away. I charge a flat rate for projects entirely tracked in my studio. If I’m mixing your stems it’s by the hour.
